About the School

photo: St. Ann School

St. Ann School of Cape Ann was started as a school for Cape Ann's fishing community. Its first students came from families of various cultures that strived to make a better life for themselves and consequently sought a high quality, faith based education. Today, we remember our history and continue the legacy. St. Ann School welcomes everyone to our school community with the same passion, energy and commitment as the schools founders.

St. Ann School of Cape Ann is owned and governed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston and is committed to the teachings and dctorines of the Roman Catholic Church. In August 2009, St. Ann School became an Independent Corporation governed by an established Board of Trustees. The Trustees are appointed by, and are accountable to, Cardinal Seán O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston.

Our curriculum has been enhanced by Merrimack College, we have created a lay board of area business and education professionals, and our enrollment has increased 76%! We have plans to renovate our 125-year old school building. We are working to ensure that our school, where, ultimately, 98% of students graduate high school and 97% go on to college, can continue to educate Cape Ann’s youth.

Why Catholic Education

Many may wonder, why Catholic education?

Catholic education is based on the premise that every child has strengths, God-given talents and interests to be encouraged and developed. The benefits of a strong Catholic education are many. Studies show that Catholic school students consistently score higher in most areas of study than their peers in public schools. Approximately 60 percent of eighth grade graduates from Catholic Schools enroll in Catholic high schools and 95 percent of Catholic high school graduates enroll in post-secondary school. In regards to faculty, Catholic school teachers have a long tenure and they see Catholic schools as part of a personal mission and ministry. In addition to an exceptional education and devoted faculty, parents actively seek the value-based, faith formation that Catholic schools provide for their children.

St. Ann School will build upon the strong Catholic faith taught and enhance the academic environment for all students in our school. Our mission is to help these students so they can truly develop into strong individuals guided by faith and knowledge.

Catholic schools are also seen as safe places to enroll children, have good discipline and provide strong moral development for students. Catholic schools have traditionally welcomed those new to our country and community. Although our faith formation programs are focused on Catholicism, a child need not be of the Catholic faith to attend.

Our Philosophy

"The mission of the Catholic Schools has been one rooted in humanity, to provide children of all background an opportunity to learn within a faith-filled and value-based environment. Through an open and inclusive process that draws on the collective talents of outside experts and significant resources already here, we have the opportunity to chart a path that will make our Catholic schools the finest in the nation."

- Cardinal SeÁn O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston

We view education in terms of message, community, worship, and service. The students and faculty are inspired to appreciate the faith in their lives, to understand community in a global as well as local sense, to experience personal and communal prayer, and to realize the service to others is basic to the gospel message of Jesus.

St. Ann School serves the greater Cape Ann community. Our faculty has a responsibility to foster, by both word and example, Christian values which mirror the belief in the special dignity given to each person by Jesus Christ.

We view academic excellence as an achievable goal for all the students as each one learns and grows according to individual talents. We believe that the total education of each student necessitates an active collaboration with both parents and our parishes.

Our faculty has two primary goals: To teach our students to grow as Christian disciples and to teach them to think with a critical mind. It is our hope that our students will use their knowledge and their talents in service to others. In doing this, they echo the underlying message we wish to impart: In today's world, the loving, good person, even alone, can and will make a difference.
